Charlie and Ann Durso were both born and raised in the same neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, and met as teenagers. Charlie’s dad taught him that you should always be proud of the money you make for an honest day’s work, and both he and Ann learned early on that if you wanted things in life, you needed to work for them. Even as teenagers they understood the value of work: Ann was babysitting, and Charlie was shoveling snow, working on his uncle Freddy’s charter fishing boat and working at his uncle Joe’s printing company. Charlie then attended trade school at the New York School of Printing in Manhattan to become a printer like his uncle, but ultimately went to college to study accounting.
After graduation, Charlie became a CPA and financial auditor for a firm in Manhattan. Ann worked as a travel agent for a company near Wall Street. For years, Charlie and Ann commuted three hours every day to work. In Manhattan, they saw people stressed out from their jobs and suffering in silence under the duress of corporate politics. They knew that there had to be more to life, and briefly considered opening a travel agency, but the initial investment was too large.
They were then introduced to an opportunity to start their own business, and immediately knew that it was their way out. The opportunity had everything they were looking for and most importantly, gave them more time to spend with their sons, Charlie, Jr. and Danny, and their daughter, Dayna. So they decided to put their time and effort into building their own business while still working full time.
Through faith and perseverance the Dursos had built their business to the point that Ann was able to leave her full time job as a travel agent in 1982, and Charlie was able to leave his job in 1990. Today, living in the countryside of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, they have the best of both worlds: time to spend with their children and grandchildren, and the flexibility to build their marketing business on a schedule that works for them. And they continue to act as mentors to other entrepreneurs throughout North America.
As the Dursos have achieved success in their business, they also give their time and energy to support worthwhile charities. They are especially active supporting Easter Seals New York and the U.S. Dream Academy due to the programs these organizations have developed to meet the needs of children and returning veterans.
As their own business has prospered, Charlie and Ann are passionate about helping others be the best they can be, and have made this a priority in their lives. They know it’s important to have faith in everyone, and they enjoy empowering others to follow their dreams and make life count. Leading by example, the Dursos truly believe that if you refuse to lose, you will always win.
